alice

who dreamed it?

Based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice books

Directed by Anna Zapparoli

Sets by Barbara Petrecca

Music by Mario Borciani

With Benedetta Borciani and Beniamino Borciani

Our adaptation draws its structure from Alice Through the Looking Glass, embracing the winter setting and the chess game at its core. Alice steps through the looking glass to find herself in a reversed world. Her first encounter is with the Red Queen. She introduces Alice to the rules of the game: "You can be White Queen's Pawn if you wish."

Thus begins Alice's journey across the chessboard, where she meets some of the most iconic characters from both books: the Gnat, the Unicorn, the Caterpillar and his magic mushroom which causes her to change size (in a captivating shadow play scene), the Pigeon, the Cheshire Cat, the White Queen, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red King, who poses an existential dilemma: is she dreaming him, or is he dreaming her? What would happen if he woke up? Eventually, guided by the White Knight, Alice reaches the other side of the chessboard. It’s time for her to become a Queen, as prescribed by the rules of chess. A beautiful metaphor for the journey from childhood to adulthood.

Visually, the stark contrast of black and white chess pieces dominates the stage, while the hyper-realistic sounds and music by Mario Borciani add an extra layer of humour.

Perfectly suited for children aged 8 and above, the enchanting language of Lewis Carroll also captivates older students.
