A CHRISTMAS CAROL

by CHARLES DICKENS

Directed by Anna Zapparoli

Music by Mario Borciani

With Beniamino Borciani and Benedetta Borciani

Some classics never cease to move us, never lose their spark, as if they were written and performed for the first time today. No text captures the "peculiar flavour" of Christmas quite like this one, sprinkling it from the "special torch" of Dickens’ language. In our faithful adaptation one actor (Beniamino Borciani) plays Scrooge and the Narrator. For all the other characters and apparitions—Marley, Nephew Fred, Mr Fezziwig, the three Ghosts of Christmas, and the Cratchits—we have devised a contraption inspired by the magic lanterns that captivated Victorian audiences: the characters are tiny puppets cut out in cardboard. Benedetta Borciani lends them voice and movement from a small desk (reminiscent of little Bob Cratchit's own workspace in Scrooge’s office) at the front of the stage,– and thanks to our magic lantern they transform into gigantic projections on the backdrop, haunting poor Scrooge and knocking some sense into him. And it works, every time!

Performances take place in December.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.
